Flowink.com Updates

San Francisco, Ca.

What's good, y'all? It's your boy, The Big La. I just wanted to drop you a line and let you know what's goin' on over here at the site.

THE MUSIC LOUNGE?: The Music Lounge player is broken. Well.. more like 'dead' for the time being. The company that supported the Flam Player has gone out of business, so we can't access the backend system to update the mixes. But no worries. I'm working hard to find a suitable replacement that'll get us back on track. I'll keep y'all posted.

THE SHOUT BOX: First off, much luv to all you folks showin' us love and support on The Shout Box. It's only a temporary thing while we get the blog system set up, but you guys (fans AND fellow DJ's) have been lettin' us know we're doing a dope job and that's VERY appreicated.

MORE MIXES/MORE DJ'S: I know it's basically been me (and a big assist from the Sensei, EJ Flavors) that's been holdin' it down with mixes this year. But don't trip. My big homies The Flow, and Sincere will be back droppin' mixes in no time. They'll also be a host of guest DJ's droppin' flavor from time to time. Keep us bookmarked!

NEW PLAYLIST FOR SEPTEMBER: I just uploaded 15 new songs in The Playlist streaming player, including songs by Big Boi and Mary J., Anthony David and India.Arie, Miles Bonny and alot more. Plus, by request, I dropped in a few of my most recent remixes. Enjoy!

That's all for now folks. Peace n' La™

New Music:
"The Glow" - Mos Def

I've been very critical of Mos Def's releases the past few years. How could i not be? Black on Both Sides is one of my favorite Hip-Hop albums of all time. So when his next two releases, The New Danger and True Magic didn't measure up to his debut... I was the loudest hater, screamin' how The Mighty Mos should stop acting and get back to music.

So when I was browsing on parlourmagazine.com and peeped Steely D's post of the R. Thentic produced "The Glow", I got a glimmer of hope. First off, the track was hot. Straight Hip-Hop. This is how I like to hear my Mos Def. I'm hoping this is a sign of the future. I understand the need to stretch your creative process. But with the hottest lyricists spending more time acting. I'm extremely frightened for the state was what's left of REAL Hip-Hop. Don't leave rap alone, Mos. The game needs you!!

Shout out on what you think of this Mos Def track.

And peace to R. Thentic for the hot track! Whew...

What U Should Be Listening To:
Giovanca - "Subway Silence"

When I first heard "Pure Bliss" off of this CD, I thought it was a new Corrine Bailey Rae song. Honest mistake at first listen. But once you get deep into this solid debut from the Amsterdam native, you lose all those similarities and start to get a feel for this songbird's unique sound.

"Meloncholy You" sounds like something out of Motown in the 60's/early 70's. "You Can Do It" seems to channel A Tribe Called Quest. And... ok, "Pure Bliss" does sound like Corrine Bailey Rae, but this song is hot, so who cares.

In any case, "Subway Silence" should be an essential purchase for those looking for that Neo-soul, Sunday morning coffee vibe. It's definitely on my heavy rotation list. Pick it up.

Essential CD's Of The Moment:
Stacy Epps - "The Awakening"

I remember the first time I heard the Madlib/MF Doom Collabo: 'Madvillainy". I was reviewing the release and I had been very excited by what I was hearing. Then track 18 came on. Tucked in between "Fancy Clown" (my favorite song on the CD) and "Supervillain", was an interluded called "Eye". The song was only 1:57" but I spent a half hour listening to it on repeat. It was distorted and unpolished... almost as if it was taken off of a cassette. But the thing that made it perfect was the vocalist's incredibly sexy, hearty and authentic vocals on top. It sounded like a quick jam session and i was pissed it wasn't a three minute song. But I got over it. It had brought Stacy Epps to my attention. I can't remember how long i waited to get more songs from her, but when she released her "Ruff Draft" CD, It was just enough to hold me until she FINALLY dropped "The Awakening" this year. And it doesn't disappoint. A classic unconventional banger, she manages to do what alot of female artists can't pull off... maintain a sense of broad appeal without sacrificing her sense of uniqueness. I love this CD. From the moment "Eppisode 1" kicks off, you're taken on a trippy ride through her own personal corner of Hip-Hop and Soul. This is an essential purchase. Put some money on this one. You won't regret it. FLOWINK CERTIFIED 4 SHO.

Remix Of The Moment:
"Yeah (AnthosFlip)"

Usher f/ Lil John & Ludacris

I think i was one of the 3 people on the planet that didn't care for this song. Just not a big follower of Lil John productions. It ain't wack... it's just not my thing. So when I heard Anthos' remix, I got a new perspective on the song. The remix is so unorthodox, it just doesn't sound quite right... but at the same time is f*ckin' hot. Especially when Luda drops his verse.

Make no mistakes, Anthos has got skills. My man released two volumes of his "Hip-Hop Jazz Remixes & Classics", and both have some heavy hitters for neo nuts like us. This dude here remixed "Work It Out" by Beyonce.. another song that wasn't one of my favorites. But Anthos sprinkled some 'soul' on the cut and now i rock it in HEAVY rotation. Jump over to his myspace page and see if you can grab these volumes. In the meantime, check out "Yeah". You'll hear what i mean.
